Walton Lake

Jun 28, 2008 by BooBee | Add comment
Weather: Sunny/Hot
Water Temp: 76 Degrees

MONROE, NY -- Launched at 6AM with my friend Bill to get the morning bite. We fished the shoreline on the opposite end of the boat launch fishing spinnerbaits and topwater baits until about 8:30AM. We had several misses but I got a nice smallie and LMB in the morning.

This smallie hit the spook very close to the shoreline but surprisingly didn't give much of a fight for his size...

After we fished topwater on the shaded side of the lake we started fishing the docks along side the lake next to the main road. We had tons of pan fish "pecking" at our lures and I lost a nice fish that for some reason I failed to hook properly; despite shaking the boat on my hook set. As we made our way back to the boat launch about 10:30AM we noticed bait fish and just as we passed the "calm" bait fish, they started going nuts. I flipped my senko into the frenzy and was rewarded with this feeding bass...

This bass was the best fight of the day, maybe cause he was so hungry going after the bait fish. We ended the day by Noon with about 5 fish in the boat; not too shabby. Temps started to sore by the time we were leaving the lake. Next week we may stop at Round Lake since we pass it by but have yet to fish it. :o)

Chodikee Lake

Weather: Rain/Thunder Storms
Water Temp: 84 Degrees

NEW PALTZ, NY -- Went fishing with my friend Bill for our Father's Day weekend treat. I had some things to do in the early AM so we headed out by Noon. When we arrived to the lake several people were leaving, sun still blazing above.

We launched by about 1pm and not even 30 minutes into our fishing we hear thunder; "Uh-Oh". We decided to fish near the boat launch - "just in case". We started off with some soft plastics and a spinnerbait. We noticed fish were breaking through the lilly pads so I decided, what the heck let me try a frog. On about my 3rd cast I got a 12" bass on the frog. As Bill tried to tie on a frog the rain began. We still waited to see what would happen when down came a down pour which forced us out of the water into the car to wait it out.

After 20 minutes in the car, the rain stopped and the sun was once again blazing high in the sky. We got back in the boat and began fishing down the lake with frogs in hand. Chodikee is loaded with lilly pads and if you love frogging, then you WILL have a blast on this lake. Bill caught the first fish on a frog after our return on the water.

As we continued down the lake we each kept catching fish, nothing huge but a heck of a lot of fun. At one point I had a fish keep coming up for my frog as he could not get my frog in his mouth on his first 3 attempts. I believe on the 4th burst he got my frog in his mouth and it was on. I quickly reeled to keep him from digging into the lilly pads and breaking off. To my surprise I was able to drag him over the pads to only see he was pretty big (3lbs).

Walton Lake

Weather: Very Hot
Water Temp: 71 Degrees

MONROE, NY -- Went fishing with my younger brother to Walton Lake in Monroe. We arrived about 8:30am and the temps were already soaring as the weekend forecast predicted temps in the high 90's.

We fished all along the shoreline that was shaded in hopes of finding those fish that were trying to keep cool and out of the direct sun. Walton, from what I could see doesn't have a lot of cover (although it was my first visit and we hadn't covered the entire lake) so we fished with hopes of finding a pattern.

My brother hooked into several fish, how don't ask because I'm supposed to be the pro, but he did lose all his fish from his failure to set the hook on the fish. I on the other hand knew very well how and when to set the hook and the only thing I hooked into was a huge smallie. In the excitement of catching that sucker I forgot to weigh 'em. Grr!

Other than my brother losing fish left & right, the smallie was the only fish I saw for the 5hrs we fished. Walton lake is covered with a lot of lilly pads but as we fished we saw a lot of frogs sitting on lilly pads enjoying the sun. We watched in hopes some bass would come up and savor the meals on the pads but none ever emerged. Having seen no frogs get eaten, we didn't even bother throwing frogs.

Look at this guy just hanging out. He even went for a swim a few times with no risk to his life (go figure).
