Baits: Tube, Frog
WAPPINGER FALLS, NY -- Launched at the lake 6AM sharp hoping to find some bedding bass.
Started off on the North West end of the lake. Since I had never fished that area it turned out to be an interesting morning as there was a small island in the corner where I picked off a few fish and the shoreline is loaded with laydowns. Just about all my fish came from some form of timber that the fish found security near until I set the hook then they fought for their lives. :o)
I caught one fish on a frog from some mats that fish were blowing up through and the rest came on a giant tube I like to throw on a very light weight (1/4 ounce) and a red bead for sound. Was I throwing the bait on beds? I'm not entirely sure but I do know some came off beds. I was fishing very close to the shoreline but kept my distance. I figured if I can see the bed, he can see me!
They simply loved my tube today!
I fished the entire shoreline on the main lake, but did try the area past the bridge (RT9) and only hooked into one fish. All the fish seemed to be in the main lake relating to timber. I fished until 11:30AM when the wind started picking up ending the day with 10 fish which is a complete shocker for Wappingers (for me at least). Most fish were actually pretty big at about 3lbs (the one I did weigh was 2.8).
Wappingers Lake is DEFINITELY on my radar now! :o)
I did fish relatively close to another guy that launched with me in the morning and we spoke, he caught comparable numbers but more than me. He was a regular at the lake and said the lake is actually very good. He claims last Monday he caught almost 30 bass and considering I had ten and the man had over a dozen today I can't say his claim is unrealistic.
