Whaley Lake

HOLMES, NY -- Went with my buddy Bill to Whaley lake since I told him all kinds of stories about a 100 bass fish massacre. We arrived about 9AM and began fishing the island just a few hundred yards from the boat launch hoping we'd stick fish almost right away. Boy, were we wrong; dead wrong! About an hour into fishing I finally hooked up with a bass on a worm.

Bill fished like a machine to only hook up with one bass several hours into our day...

We fished until about 3pm, actually I don't even recall the exact time we left because I was SO disappointed with the lake that I was ready to get off at noon. We fished every area I've known to hold fish. I'm not talking any specific pattern that may be based on a particular season, I was simply looking for fish; any fish - even pan fish!

Whaley fished so bad that I'm not sure if I'll be out to the lake again anytime soon. We probably should have gone to fish Chadwick if I wanted to boat a lot of fish. We ended the day with 2 bass and 2 pickerel.

My wife and I fished Whaley lake a few times in the past few years and it has ALWAYS, yes ALWAYS produced a boat load of fish even on a BAD day. I got my buddy all hyped for a boat load of fish only to get him nearly skunked. There seemed to be barely any weeds in the lake so my guess is weed treatment has been added to the lake. That seems to be a common thing now and days with homeowner associations. They want to be able to pleasure boat and jet ski with no regard for the fishery.

In my opinion it only takes away from the revenue to the town as anglers will eventually stop going to the lakes that have been treated and will no longer have lunch in the area of local lakes and essentially never bringing revenue to the towns. Way to go homeowners! If you keep this up you'll drive your home prices down; so I hope. :o)

Whaley of yesterday is now a thing of the past or well on it's way to being a thing of the past. Have fun pleasure boaters!
