Wappinger Lake

Weather: Cloudy/Heavy Rain/Sunny
Water Temp: 68 Degrees

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Decided at the last minute to fish this lake since I was itching to get out more often this year. I started my season slow this year. Having been to Wappingers twice before I just about fished out every area except the area near the boat rental house just off route 9.

I started fishing mid-day and about 1pm the rain came down really hard for a good 45 minutes. After toughing it out the rain stopped and the sun came out blazing, giving me the opportunity to fish the new area that I was coming upon by the time the rain stopped. I tried fishing on my way to the boat rental house with not even a nibble. Once I made my way down the narrow water passage I began getting bites and landing fish. I even threw out top water and was getting bites on a spook.

Heck I even found smallies…

I didn’t realize there were smallmouth in Wappingers but it was a nice surprise. Once you pass the bridge on RT9 the water narrows and is only about 10FT deep in the center of the waterway. Half way down the waterway there is a nice flat perfect for spawning fish so this is the spot you probably want to hit in April/May since it’s near deep water. I continued down as far as I could go to the waterfalls. At that point I allowed the current of the falls to drift the boat back toward RT9 and in the process I dropped a senko into the water and just kept getting fish after fish. I must of caught several and it looked like there were rock formations along the shoreline walls. I presume the fish were holding to those rocks.

This area has been the MOST productive on my few outings to this lake. If this is the only area that has the most action, this lake is only good for a half-day of fishing. Overall, not a bad day.
